Become A Driving Instructor
Becoming a driving instructor can give you a rewarding career with great prospects. There has never been a better time to become a driving instructor. |
With out of town shops and public transport patchy at best, it is almost essential to be able to drive in this modern society. Basically just about everybody learns to drive these days!
Driving regulations are becoming ever more complicated and driving tests more complex and difficult to pass, on average a 1st time pass takes around 40 hours of professional tuition, this is creating a continuous demand for qualified driving instructors and the role is becoming more varied.
With the introduction of ‘Duty of care’ laws, companies need to demonstrate that they have a risk assessment in place for their drivers, many ADI’s are being attracted to this ‘Fleet training’ leaving learners in waiting lists for driving lessons. This demand could present you with the opportunity to begin a new career, and to start your own business or work on a franchise basis for an established driving school.
To teach for money, you must be a DSA approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or be operating under license as a Trainee gaining experience to become an ADI.
I find being an ADI rewarding, it offers me a variety in my working life. This year I have worked with learner drivers, also office staff and council employees on eco driving events and been involved in delivering presentations and of course training new potential driving instructors.
I get a real buzz from my work and you could too, imagine how you feel when a learner passes their test after coming to you as a novice; or the expression on the face of an experienced driver who can’t believe you have just saved them 15mpg and completed the same distance in a shorter time!
BENEFITS OF BEING A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR
- Decide how much you work and earn
- Fit work around your family commitments
- Take holidays and breaks when you decide
- Drive a brand new, fully-maintained car for personal use
- Teach a real life skill
- Make a difference to people’s lives and to road safety
- Every day is different and a new challenge
- No experience necessary; it’s a career open to all
If you like meeting people, want a job with career prospects and can't wait to work on your own terms, then driving instruction could be for you.
Start up costs for a self-employed ADI are much lower than those for many other types of business - most families would have car anyway, the only additional cost would be dual controls. Even the insurance is typically no higher than that for a family saloon car (this year mine was £350) so, once you have become qualified, it's relatively easy to get going. The cost of the training is not beyond most people and comparable to that of a two week family holiday at around £2500.
